The lymph is a sticky, slow moving body liquid creating the waste removal system of the human body, fighting against foreign invasion by bacteria, viruses. For over 90 years numerous research has been carried out proving that Manual Lymphatic Drainage - MLD helps to reduce symptoms of various health disorders.
Primarily, it was aimed to treat sinuses and breathing problems but soon it was noticed that it works on many different levels and affects the whole body. This is because if one body organ starts working better, it gradually improves the effectiveness of other organs.
MLD is very helpful and sometimes even required in post-surgical oedema, preventing developing seromas (fluid accumulation), it speeds up healing after cosmetic surgery, liposuction, tummy tucks, fractures, torn ligaments, sprains. It speeds up healing of wounds and burns, reduces stretch marks and other skin conditions. It helps with reducing “orange” skin, cellulitis, and sepsis symptoms.
MLD as a detox treatment is very helpful during withdrawal from substance addictions or after infections. Whenever lymph nodes are removed, for example after breast surgery, the swollen arms might be very painful. Lymphatic drainage has an analgesic effect, reducing the pain as pain mediators are being drained out easily, so that they are no longer active in the tissue.
This is a deeply relaxing massage using gentle to medium pressure that has a powerful effect on the body with decongestant, detoxification and a positive effect on the immune system. The effects are usually felt immediately. From my practice Clients often say that they are calmer, feel cleansed and balanced. It's a perfect treatment for pregnant women with swollen legs.
The lymphatic drainage performed on the head, face and chest area significantly helps with headache, migraine, sinuses, improves the colour of face, improves sleeping pattern.
The lymph doesn't have a pump like the heart is for the blood. Only working muscles, massage and gravitation can move the lymph. Sedentary lifestyle doesn't help for your immune system. Sometimes, even active people can have malfunctioning lymphatics, so the lymph (and toxins) stagnate causing discomfort.
Many things you can do for the lymphatic drainage by yourself, at home, like dry brushing, putting your limbs up higher than your heart for a while. Hot and cold showers make muscles contract and relax so the lymph is also flowing more easily. Staying hydrated, deep diaphragmatic breathing and moderate exercising also play a significant role in well-being. It’s a lifestyle thing.
